Now, before we jump in, let me just share a little bit of background to the discovery of this ‘secret weapon’….

My intention is that you align with it, inside and out, versus something you just incorporate into your business without truly understanding its purpose and power. 

So this year I’m celebrating my 13th year in business, so this was actually a journey 13 years in the making (gosh, time flies!).
Over these 13 years, I've had the honor and privilege of coaching and mentoring over 13,000 professionals in over 140 different countries
I've authored two books: Your Daily W.O.W. and Hot Pursuit.

I've created two certification programs as well as numerous online programs, workshops, and mastermind groups.
I had the once in a lifetime amazing opportunity to be one-on-one mentored by the legend, the one and only John C. Maxwell for a year. Having him pour into my life and into my business was just truly, truly a priceless life-altering experience. And if you don't know who John C. Maxwell is, Google him, he's a legend. Let me repeat that, because it’s worth repeating…

I have a thriving dream coaching business that does NOT come at the expense of my personal life. If anything, is SUPPORTS my personal life!

And that’s the most important take-away I have for you today…

That YES, you CAN have a successful business that supports your family AND enjoy the time with your family too.

However it is NOT doable unless you avoid the mistakes I made early on in my coaching business, because this is NOT how it all started out…

In the beginning, I did a lot of things wrong, specifically struggling with the BUSINESS side of the coaching business. You see, developing and building my coaching skillset came natural to me. But when it came to the business side and entrepreneurship, I had ZERO experience. 

I really had no idea what I was doing. 

 I had a gazillion unanswered questions…
  • Do I need a website? 
  • Do I build a course, workshop, or…?
  • How do I even build any of those?
  • How do I get clients?
  • Where do I even start with them?
  • What should I charge?
  • How should I package my offer?
I don't know…
I don't know…
I don't know…
I had all these unanswered questions.

Luckily, that didn’t stop me from slooooowly but surely putting one foot in front of the other to get one client here and there.

And then the struggle flipped.

Then once I had a few clients and things were starting to take off, I struggled with the non-stop hustle and grind.

All of sudden, my business became all-consuming and I was in this constant content creation mode. I was constantly creating new packages and new offers. I felt like I was constantly reinventing the wheel, constantly creating something new. I didn't know how to leverage what I had already created. And so I was making things way harder, way more complicated than they needed to be.

And yeah, sure. I was getting a few wins under my belt here and there, but I never felt like I could really get ahead…
But the worst part was that, I stopped being a present wife and mother to my family. My business was coming at a HUGE expense of my family.
Actually, the moment I realized it had gotten REALLY BAD, is the year my family and I took a ‘family trip’ to my parents condo in Brazil.

I had decided that I was going to work from my parents' high rise condo in sunny Brazil for five weeks. I was headed to tropical paradise where I was going to be working right off the ocean, had this glorious view. I was going to get so much done and I was going to be hanging out at the beach with my family, having the best time ever.

That was the vision anyways, the reality turned out VERY different!
I was in this hot and stuffy bedroom, which I turned into my office, but really all it was, was this little rinky dink desk with this super hard wooden chair that I would sit on all day doing coaching calls, creating content, creating new packages, writing blogs, responding to emails…

All while my family would be heading out to the beach.

That's right.

I'd be sitting in this room and my family would head to the beach every day – without me.

And I'm like… “okay, bye have fuuuuun”.

From my little window in the condo I could see them down at the beach while I was sitting in this hot and stuffy bedroom slash office working all day.

It was torture.

I distinctly recall sitting in that hot stuffy room one day, on that hard wood chair, and just running the same sentence through my head…

I need a break…
I need a break…
I just need a break…

My chest was tight.
My heart was pounding.
My fists were clenched, and...
I just  felt trapped :/
I had this mountain of work to do. I felt like I had no control of. I felt like I had really imprisoned myself into my business and I just wanted to scream. 

I was so annoyed and I thought to myself… 
"My goodness, what have I done?"
I wasn't running my business...
My business was running me.

It owned me.

I thought to myself, I really love my clients. I really do... 

I love what I do, but I don't love my business

It sucked. I had no life. I was in this constant creation mode of always reinventing the wheel… and I was done with it.

I was so done with reinventing the wheel.
It was exhausting.
It was time consuming.

I thought to myself there had to be a better way.
BUT that was the question…
WHAT exactly was that other way?!
At the time, I didn’t have the answer to that.

And when I came back home from that glorious Brazil family (WORK) vacation… I was more exhausted, more burned out then when I left; and I was tempted to just (figuratively) blow up the entire business.

I was ready to get out.

Luckily for me, I was saved by a colleague, and a single unexpected remark that would transform my business forever.

You see, when I got back, I went to lunch with a colleague of mine, and we were just chatting it up and catching up. He was asking me about business and what was happening. And you know, I'm sharing with him, my epiphany, but yet my quandary.

That’s when he asked me what books I was reading, and what I was currently studying…

And well, I perked up proudly and rattled off some personal development books like “Wayne Dyer’s The Power of Intention, and Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements, and”…

And that’s when he cut me off and said:
"Yes Melissa, I know you love reading those books, 
but what BUSINESS books are you reading? 
What BUSINESS strategies are you studying and implementing?”
I was silent.
I had no answer.

That’s when he hit me with some tough love: “I hate to tell you, but you've just built another job for yourself. You are just working way too hard…

And then he said the one line that’s been permanently ingrained in my mind ever since that fateful day. 

He said:
"Melissa, you need to learn to LEVERAGE your resources and MAXIMIZE your and your client's results.
And I was like, yes, yes, you're right!

That's what I need to do! I need to learn to leverage my resources and maximize my and my client's results. YES!

But wait… Whoa, whoa, whoa…

What does that mean?
How does one do that?
What does that look like?
And I realized in that moment that I was actually really confident as a coach, 
but I was not confident as a business builder.
Do you know what I mean?
Can you relate to that?

I mean, previously, this was my business building strategy (see if this resonates with you)… Here’s what I would do:

…I would work really, really, really hard. Get a client. Figure out how to serve that client. Create some content for that client then serve them.

…Then work really, really hard. Get another client, figure out how to best serve that client. Piece together some content for that client, and then serve them.

…Then work really, really hard. Fill the group, get that group going, and figure out how to serve that group. Create some new content for that group. Then serve them.

…Then work really, really hard… (and repeat the insanity).

I mean, I had no real systems in place.

I had no automation or structure. I had no idea how to truly leverage my resources and maximize my and my client's results.

And so in that moment, I decided going forward, things HAD TO change.

And so over the next 6 years I set out on a mission to create the most impactful, powerful, purposeful system to serve my clients, without having to reinvent the wheel each and every time. 

A process that could serve all of my current clients AND all of my future clients as well.

I started obsessing about leverage, leverage, leverage!

And my motto became:
"Work Smarter, 
Not Harder!"
And so a business partner of mine and I, we came together, we put our heads in our hearts together to figure out what was the common thread that ran through all of our most successful clients.

Why were they SO successful?

What small initiatives created BIG results?
What was their foundational content?
What were their processes?
What created the biggest transformations for their clients?
What worked over, and over, and over again?

I must admit, this took a lot of time, resources, energy and work hours to figure out initially…

But it was SO worth it!

Out of that process, we were able to find the common threads, translate them into a repeatable system, and package it to leverage inside of ANY coaching or training business.

It didn’t matter if it was…

Packaging and systemizing the common threads changed E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G in our own business.

We found out that by leveraging our new findings I was able to first and foremost, cut my client prep time down by 80%!

For me that personally translated from hours of client prep time, to just 20 minutes on average. I can’t begin to express just how much more time freedom that has awarded me.

I could now finally scale my business using this system to quickly customize my service and deliver it repeatedly, consistently, over and over and over again – without sacrificing the quality of my services.

I’m a stickler for transparency and specifics.

I never make a claim without backing it up. I know that’s in short supply on social media these days, but you’ll always have that promise from me.

So here’s the exact breakdown of my entire coaching business (its super simple!).
1) I have my one-on-one coaching clients. This is my base.

If I were to land a client today, I would use the coaching system we established to know exactly what I was going to take them through, and exactly what they're private, VIP coaching experience was going to be. No prep time. I just need to follow the system.
I charge $20K per client for this type of individual attention, and I only offer 6 spots a year for this high level service. So that one-on-one coaching base brings in about $120,000 year after year ($20K x 6 spots = $120K).
2) Next I have my Inner Circle group. It’s like a closed-door mastermind to a hand-selected group of coaches. The coaching system already lays out the base modules and the core concepts. 

There’s nothing new to build, so I can launch a new group anytime. Sometimes I’ll also turn this into a weekend workshop instead. Either way, the process and the result is the same.
Each participant invest about $6950 to be a part of the group, and there’s about 12 seats available per year - so that generates about $83,000 for my business every year ($6950/spot x 12 spots = $83K).
3) Then there are my speaking engagements. They follow my coaching system framework as well. Once again, no need to reinvent the wheel. You want me to speak? I can do it tomorrow (heck, even TODAY!). That’s because the core message is already there, it’s part of the same established framework.

On average, I charge $7K per speaking engagement, and I’ll consistently book about 2 per year, so that brings in about $14,000 per year ($7K x 2 gigs = $14K).
And so very easily...
I’m hitting the multiple six-figure mark, 
year after year with just ONE coaching framework.
This is how simple I’ve made my coaching business. Before my system it was complicated and scattered. It was a grind. Today, it’s a breeze.

Speaking + Inner Circle/Workshops + 1:1 clients.

Come on. NO WAY!
The truth is you don't need anyone's approval to be successful.
You can start TODAY… like NOW.

When you have that level of confidence and that level of certainty, it can completely change how you show up in a sales conversation.

Like how much would you absolutely loooove to have rock solid confidence in a sales conversation?

To have rock solid confidence in the value that you're offering your clients, knowing that it's going to set them up for their greatest success and their greatest transformation?

That alone is a game-changer for anyone needing to sell their services to a new client (which by the way, is all of us if you want this to be a business!).

Imagine if Coach Kathy had instead waited…
Imagine she waited until she had crossed all her “T’s” and dotted all her “I’s. 

Imagine she waited to get her website up, her logo designed, her business cards printed… 

Imagine spending months and months packaging her services and trying to build her coaching method from scratch.

So once again, here’s the second myth…

The second myth is “that you have to have it allllll figured out first.” As you can see from Coach Kathy’s example you do not need to wait to leverage your resources and create amazing results with a go-to coaching system.

Just follow Coach Kathy’s lead, and START!

Now we get to the third and final myth that’s killing so many coaching businesses out there….

Myth #3

The myth is that “there’s more value in what you do if you create something solely and fully yourself”.

Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

You can go create something totally and fully by yourself from scratch.

But here's the truth…

The truth is that when you leverage something that's already been created (and proven to be transformational), and you add to it, you stack on top of it your own content – you can actually create an even MORE powerful, transformation program for you and for your clients.

And the best part is…

You won’t have to reinvent the wheel.

And by not reinventing the wheel, you save yourself a ton of time, money, and mistakes; which you can then use to instead serve your audience (the coaches sweet spot).
So I tell my clients:
“Don’t start from scratch where and when you don’t need to.”
Yes, there will be pieces that you’ll create solely and fully for yourself – but those can be stacked on top of a proven, transformational foundation, which will inherently lend to the results and confidence of your own pieces.

This is no different than the invention of the actual wheel. Over the years it has been adapted and upgraded and added-to… but all of that is built on top of the original, foundational design, and it’s been that way for 3000+ years.
Don’t reinvent the wheel in your coaching business.

And by the way…
You can use the foundation of a go-to coaching system to diversify into multiple product and service offerings using the exact SAME system.
I had another client (also Cathy, with a “C”, I oddly have lots of Kathy named clients), who leveraged the go-to coaching system to…

>> Deliver a two-hour keynote presentation,
>> A full-day workshop,
>> A 6-10 individual group program, and
>> A one-on-one private client package (both in-person and online).
Again, all from the SAME system.

The only difference is the DEPTH in which you serve and provide support to the client based on the service level.

As you see this client was able to immediately build this robust, diversified business model; all using this industry tested, done for you coaching system that allowed her to get off the ground running without having to wait.

So again, stop wasting your time, energy and money.

So let’s recap the third myth….

The third myth was…“That you have to have it all figured out first.”

But the secret is that you can create impact, influence, and income faster, with more confidence and with better client results when you leverage existing systems and build upon them.
So Here's The Quick Summary....
1) Don’t try and sell coaching and training services because that’s not what people are buying. People are buying your solution, so instead lead with your solution-focused signature go-to coaching system.

2) Don’t try to get it all figured out, because there’s people out there, your people, that need you RIGHT NOW. Instead compress time and effort by modeling someone who’s already figured it out by working smarter, not harder.

3) Don’t start from scratch and try and build everything yourself, as reinventing the wheel will be the death of your profitability (and your sanity). Instead leverage an existing, proven system, and build upon it to serve your clients faster with greater confidence.

Does that make sense?
It only takes ONE thing 
to make all three shifts.
Not three independent initiatives, just ONE.

And that is a tried and true, industry-tested, go-to coaching system.
